The Beautiful Game

I have been enjoying the Euro 2008 (thank you ESPN for putting all the games on in HD). I actually think I enjoy this tournament more than the World Cup. It is a shame that we have no similar type of event (to this or the Champions League) for a major US sport.

Nike hired director Guy Ritchie to produce a soccer ad which I think it just fantastic. The full 2 minute version is available for viewing on their website here.

1. We do have an event like this in America. From regional to super-regional to College World Series, Division I college baseball feels a lot like UEFA's events. And this is to say nothing of the NCAA basketball tournaments.

2. What American sports could borrow from Europe is the concept of relegation. The Kansas City Royals long ago would have been banished to the Pacific Coast League, perhaps in favor of promoting the Albuquerque Isotopes.

3. I've posted "Take it to the next level" and linked this item at Jurisdynamics.

I had no idea you were a soccer fan! I love the sport, and am very grateful for the HD broadcast (what's up, NBA??). The Nike ad is great, however, my favorite remains the "Jose + 10" campaign from the '06 world cup. It can be seen on youtube here: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=7hEJahOkZSs&feature=related.

That was a beautiful video - super: The player is the camera; the player is the story; the player has a sense of humour.
